Courting can be taxing at times. More often than not, when the time comes to say "I love you", you get that lump in throat that leaves you hyperventilating. I've had my share of girlfriends but I suppose I was bitten hard by the love bug with my wife. The first time I set eyes on her, I knew I love her. The problem, she's the sister of a friend. This became a huge factor as culture dictates that it could turn ugly if things don't work out.
I never did formally court my wife. We did go out several times but it was always a group date. I had this feeling that she liked me too but I didn't want to make a move because she might think I was taking advantage of her feelings. I would be content with passing by their place on Saturday nights just to get a glimpse of her. I have been very confident around girls before but not with her. I'd make it appear that I was dropping by just to hang around with her brother and our friends. It took me awhile before I was able to finally express my feelings.
But still, I couldn't tell her how I felt. I did not even court her so how can I propose? One rainy afternoon, I gave her a call. I told her I had something to say but couldn't get myself to say it. She told me it's okay and that she'd like to hear what I have to say. I nervously asked her if it was okay to sing it to her instead. Modesty aside, I do have a great singing voice. So I sang her Jim Croce's "So I have to say I love you in a Song". She fell silent. I suppose it took several minutes for it to sink in. Well, she did accept my love. We got married twice, civil and church. That's how much I loved her. After a year and half, we were blessed with our first child. Looking back, I would laugh at myself and how stupid I was. Love does make you do the strangest things.
How about you? How did you say "I love you" the first time?
